The Yushun Horse Club’s Japan-based star Espoir City arrived at Churchill Downs early Tuesday morning for a run in the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic, settling in his stall in the quarantine barn at 4:30 a.m. (EDT). Rachel Alexandra, North America’s 2009 Horse of the Year, was retired Tuesday and co-owner Jess Jackson plans to breed her to Curlin, the continent’s 2007 and 2008 Horse of the Year. The decision to end her career comes on the heels of a disappointing 2010 season, one where she never regained the form she showed as a dominant 3-year-old, winning only two of her five races.
