Cracks in alliance fighting for separate states
Darjeeling, 9 OCT: Cracks have surfaced in the three-party alliance fighting for separate states in North Bengal with sharp differences among top leaders of Gorkha Janamukti Morcha, Kamatapur Progressive Party and Greater Cooch Behar Democratic Party. The GJMM, KKP led by Mr Atul Roy and GCBDP led by Mr Asutosh Barma which joined hands last year for a common fight for separate states in North Bengal do not see eye to eye any more, GJM president Bimal Gurung said here

Sikkim: Chamling announces capacity building institutes
Gangtok, 6 OCT: Expressing concern over the lack of enthusiasm among the local people to take up private enterprises, Sikkim chief minister Mr Pawan Kumar Chamling (in picture) today announced that capacity building institutes would be set up in each Assembly segment of the state, by December this year. Each Assembly segments must have a functional capacity building institutes by the year end and the authorities should hire accommodation on rent for the purpose in the event of unavailability of government premises, he said at the consultative meeting on the capacity building

Bhandari celebrates 69th birthday
Gangtok, 5 OCT: Former Sikkim Chief Minister and the state unit Congress President Mr Nar Bahadur Bhandari today celebrated his 69th birthday and vowed to serve the people till his last breath. A stream of people from across the state visited him at the party office at Development Area and greeted him on the occasion of his birthday and wished him a long life. Mr Bhandari, who has been out of power for over 15 years, acknowledged the greetings by his party men and followers and pledged to serve the people of Sikkim till his last breath.

Honour for Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Society
Siliguri, Oct. 5 : After several accolades for its community service programmes along the toy train tracks, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Society (DHRS) now has an award in its kitty. The Association of Community Rail Partnerships (ACoRPS), a UK-based federation of over 60 community rail way partnerships and promotion groups, has honoured the Society with the Best International Achievement Award for its welfare projects along the toy train routes.

Tips on eco-tourism from Singapore
In a first-of-its-kind initiative by tour agencies of the region, a training of unemployed youths in eco-tourism ventures will begin high in the mountains of Sikkim in December. Help Tourism, a Siliguri-based tour operator, and Hee Bermiok Tourism Development and Heritage Conservation Society have tied up with Jet Airways and the Singapore Scout Association to open the centre at Hee Bermiok in West Sikkim. “The aim is to train the youths of Mangalbari, Kaluk, Rinchenpong, Hee Bermiok, Dentam and Uttaray, all in West Sikkim, on eco-adventure tourism in the region,” said Raj Basu, associated with Help Tourism and the conservation society.
