DM reaches office in state car – Rival rally in the time of shutdown

The district collectorate remained open for the first time today during a Gorkha Janmukti Morcha strike, the state government testing waters as the hill party kept its cadres off the roads to avoid confrontation and delink itself from the violence it has come to be associated with after Madan Tamang’s murder.

When in doubt, call a bandh

Darjeeling, June 18: The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha today called an “indefinite” strike in the Darjeeling hills from tomorrow, falling back on a time-tested tactic after being forced on the backfoot since the murder of Madan Tamang. The Morcha, which had been hunting for a pretext to re-assert its strength, said the bandh had been called to protest the government’s failure to reply why police lathicharged its party supporters on Wednesday night in Kurseong. The government has been stepping up heat on Bimal Gurung’s party since Tamang’s murder on May 21

‘Boy’ who delivered the killer blow

A “boy” in a white T-shirt had delivered the killer blow, driving a sharp weapon into Madan Tamang, says Laxman Pradhan, the general secretary of the ABGL, who was present at the spot. The “boy” was among the three who had reached Tamang while a mob of 100 rained stones on the others. Pradhan recounts what he saw lying on the ground before a policeman dragged him away: Things were fine that morning (Friday, May 21) and preparations were almost final.

Bloodstain on Gandhian claim

Darjeeling, May 21: Gorkha Janmukti Morcha general secretary Roshan Giri denied his party’s role in the killing of ABGL leader Madan Tamang, saying “we do not believe in the politics of violence and killings”. But after today’s incident, the Morcha will find it increasingly difficult to shake off charges that the party indulged in violence to terrorise its political opponents in the hills as Tamang’s killing is widely being seen as the handiwork of Bimal Gurung’s outfit

Khukuris silence guns Cops toe govt peace line -Cops toe govt peace line

May 21: As many as 10 armed policemen were on duty, but not a single shot was fired save the two by Madan Tamang’s personal security officer when over a hundred alleged Gorkha Janmukti Morcha supporters overran the Akhil Bharatiya Gorkha League’s meeting venue this morning. Senior police officers said the force — 40 personnel — posted at Clubside motor stand was enough to tackle the mob that had descended since the alleged Morcha supporters were armed only with khukuris and not the firepower the personnel had.

Catch culprits with caution

May 21: The Bengal government today said it had asked the Darjeeling administration to arrest the culprits behind Madan Tamang’s murder, but gave enough indication that, like in the recent past, it would not take any action that could “precipitate” the situation in the hills. After a meeting with chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, both home secretary Samar Ghosh and director-general of police Bhupinder Singh made it clear the “sensitive” hill situation would have to be handled “carefully”. “We have sent additional state forces to Darjeeling,” Ghosh said.

Morcha issues 10-day bandh in the Darjeeling Hills

Kalimpong, May 13: The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha today said it would pull out of talks for an “interim” set-up for the Darjeeling hills and revive the demand for Gorkhaland in a fresh bout of muscle-flexing that came with a 10-day shutdown call next month. Morcha boss Bimal Gurung said “everything will remain closed” during the June 12-21 bandh, as he mounted pressure on the Centre and the Bengal government to agree to the inclusion of Siliguri and Gorkha-speaking areas of the Dooars and the Terai under the proposed authority’s jurisdiction. “Henceforth, we will not carry forward the interim arrangement, but will work towards the creation of Gorkhaland state,” Gurung told a media conference in Deolo, 5km from Kalimpong

Govt blamed for Morcha bandh

The tourism sector and the business community today hit out at the state government for remaining silent to the 10-day strike of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha, fearing that the ripple effect of the bandh may extend till the Pujas. “Over the past two-and-a half years, the tourism sector in north Bengal has suffered, not only because of the frequent strikes and agitation but the silence of the state government as well,” said Raj Basu, the working president of the Eastern Himalaya Travel and Tour Operators’ Association. “The current tourist season usually extends till mid-June when the forests close down and the rains come.

Representatives of the four organisations — the Janmukti Secondary Teachers’ Organisation, Gorkha Primary Teachers’ Organisation, Janmukti Karmachari Sangathan and the Janmukti Asthai Karmachari Sangathan — reached the subdivisional office before 10am to enforce the strike. Since the agitating organisations had issued a prior notice on the strike, the employees had not turned up for duty.
