Highway to Sikkim opened for traffic – Sunshine helps BRO clear debris from NH31A q Mud blow to PSU
Gangtok, Aug 29: Road connectivity between Gangtok and the rest of the country was restored this morning, three days after the vital link, NH31A, struck by landslides at seven places between 32nd Mile and Singtam. Two days of sunshine helped Project Swastik personnel of the Border Roads Organisation, which maintains the highways of Sikkim, clear the debris and restore traffic.

Heavy rains, landslides in Sikkim
Heavy rains triggering landslides has affected large parts of Sikkim in which one person was killed and many houses were damaged, officials said today. Three persons were swept away at Manpari Basti across Singtam on the banks of Teesta in south Sikkim district on Friday during heavy rains while two of them managed to swim back to safety, one of them identified as Mamta Rai (31) died, they said. The Mangan-Singtam highway the lifeline between east and north Sikkim is blocked at 14 places between Dikchu to Singtam due to landslides since Friday evening, they said.

Plea to develop Sikkim as int’l tourist destination
Members in the Rajya Sabha on Saturday demanded for special financial assistance to Sikkim to develop it as an international tourist destination. Moving a private member’s resolution, the Sikkim Democratic Front leader O T Lepcha said: “The state is full of natural and scenic beauty. Eighty-seven per cent of the state is under forest cover and the third highest peak of the world, Mount Kanchenjunga, is in the state”

NBPTOCC calls for indefinite strike from Aug 31
The North Bengal Passenger Transport Owners Coordination Committee (NBPTOCC) today announced an indefinite strike from Tuesday in Jalpaiguri and CoochBehar district and Siliguri sub-division of Darjeeling district.
