Stranger in a strange land

She has been chatting non-stop with me in the darkness of the late evening about her school and students. GJMM withdraws indefinite strike in Darjeeling

DARJEELING: The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha has withdrawn the indefinite strike called in Darjeeling hills from Monday in view of the tripartite talks with the Centre and West Bengal government on September 7. The decision was announced by GJM General Secretary Roshan Giri after a meeting with the Darjeeling District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police Devendra Pratap Singh.

Darjeeling, Aug 30 (IANS) The West Bengal Police Monday filed a charge-sheet against 30 accused in the Akhil Bharatiya Gorkha League (ABGL) leader Madan Tamang murder case. However, the names of several top Gorkha Jan Mukti (GJM) leaders, whose names figured in the FIR, were not mentioned.

Labour front backs NHPC Stage V workers

GANGTOK, August 28: The labour frontal organization of the ruling Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) party has backed the NHPC Teesta Stage V workers who have threatened to launch an indefinite strike at the hydro-electric power plant at Balutar from August 31 if their pending demands are not met by the management. In a meeting held today at SDF party headquarters here at Indira Bypass, the All Sikkim Democratic Labour Front (ASDLF) said that the demands raised by the labourers of NHPC Teesta Stage V plant are fully justified. The labour front also demanded the NHPC management to resolve the labour issue without any further delay

Highway to Sikkim opened for traffic – Sunshine helps BRO clear debris from NH31A q Mud blow to PSU

Gangtok, Aug 29: Road connectivity between Gangtok and the rest of the country was restored this morning, three days after the vital link, NH31A, struck by landslides at seven places between 32nd Mile and Singtam. Two days of sunshine helped Project Swastik personnel of the Border Roads Organisation, which maintains the highways of Sikkim, clear the debris and restore traffic.

Heavy rains, landslides in Sikkim

Heavy rains triggering landslides has affected large parts of Sikkim in which one person was killed and many houses were damaged, officials said today. Three persons were swept away at Manpari Basti across Singtam on the banks of Teesta in south Sikkim district on Friday during heavy rains while two of them managed to swim back to safety, one of them identified as Mamta Rai (31) died, they said. The Mangan-Singtam highway the lifeline between east and north Sikkim is blocked at 14 places between Dikchu to Singtam due to landslides since Friday evening, they said.

Plea to develop Sikkim as int’l tourist destination

Members in the Rajya Sabha on Saturday demanded for special financial assistance to Sikkim to develop it as an international tourist destination. Moving a private member’s resolution, the Sikkim Democratic Front leader O T Lepcha said: “The state is full of natural and scenic beauty. Eighty-seven per cent of the state is under forest cover and the third highest peak of the world, Mount Kanchenjunga, is in the state”

NBPTOCC calls for indefinite strike from Aug 31

The North Bengal Passenger Transport Owners Coordination Committee (NBPTOCC) today announced an indefinite strike from Tuesday in Jalpaiguri and CoochBehar district and Siliguri sub-division of Darjeeling district. The secretary of the NBPTOCC, Pranab Mani told a press conference here that the indefinite strike has been called to protest the bad condition of roads especially the NH 31 in the three districts

Congress proposal for the Darjeeling Hills

The district hill Congress committee today said it would propose to the Centre to confer Union Territory status to the Darjeeling hills to end the ongoing agitation. K.B Chhetri, president of the Darjeeling district Congress (hills), said he would meet the Union home minister P. Chidambaram and place the proposal before him.
